Types of Floors

Engineered Floors

Engineered floors come in various thicknesses: 3/8”, 1/2”, 9/16”, 5/8”, 3/4”. They are built with 3-12 multiple-ply layers, which provide greater moisture resistance.

The top layer of the plank is real wood and comes in an almost endless variety of types and colors. Engineered floors offer a much wider selection than solid wood products.

Also, there are many finish styles, including hand-scraped, rustic, wire-brushed, distressed, shiny, and flat.

Engineered floors will be glued down on top of either concrete or plywood subfloors.
Nailing down allows for an aquatic foam to be laid or rolled between the subfloor and the wood floor to reduce sound transmission.

When choosing unfinished engineered wood floors, you can customize the color and finish.

Today, a well-engineered product can be sanded 4 times (most homeowners refinish their floors every 10 years), so you can change the look of your floors as often as you like without replacing them.

Solid Floors

Solid wood floors come in almost endless varieties.

The common ones are Oak, Walnut (American, Brazilian & African) Canadian Maple, Cherry (American & Brazilian) and Bamboo floors which have become very popular over the last 10 years.

Solid hardwood floors are available in unfinished and pre-finished.

Unfinished wood floors will need to be stained and finished after installation. This type of installation eliminates the shim micro line of separation between boards that a pre-finished wood floor has.

Pre-finished hardwood floors are planks that have been pre-stained and finished and come in various stain and finish options, such as Rustic, Blitz, and Wax finishes.

Pre-finished wood floors offer various textures, including smooth, wire-brushed, distressed, tongue-and-groove, and hand-scraped.

The top finish coat on pre-finished hardwood floors has 6-10 layers of aluminum oxide protection in various finishes: glass, semi-gloss, satin & matte.

Most times, solid hardwood floors will be installed on top of a plywood sub-floor.

SPC/Vinyl Flooring

Easy to install, SPC is available in a range of colors and styles, including hand-scraped options for a rustic look. It’s a Stone Plastic Composite, hence the name, with a realistic wood-look photo on top. It’s also very durable and scratch-resistant, so it’s a perfect choice for those with pets and small children.

It provides the look of real wood floors for a fraction of the cost. When you choose SPC floors, your color options are virtually unlimited. We are convinced you’ll be floored by all the options!

SPC floors are constructed the same way as regular wood planks and are laid in the same staggered pattern. The installation process is quite simple!

The material can simply be floated on already existing flooring if the ground is leveled. The connection between boards uses a tongue-and-groove system that can be disconnected and reconnected once installed.

Laminate Flooring

Similar to SPC, Laminate is easy to install and comes in a wide variety of textures and finishes. One thing of note for laminate is that not all of the material is waterproof.

Water-resistant at varying levels, Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic floor that gets its name from the lamination process it undergoes. Similar to SPC, a photo is placed on top of a core, usually made of melamine resin and composite fiberboard.

A low-cost alternative to hardwood floors, laminate flooring is available in a variety of colors, textures, and widths. Installation is relatively simple and a great option for your everyday DIYer. Installation is typically performed above a waterproof membrane unless a pad is attached, allowing you to float it as needed.

The simple click system allows for easy installation and removal if any issues arise.
